RRP: Leads 70p each | www.taylorsleadlounge.co.uk
Many of us daydream about setting up a tackle company, but the Taylor family from Colchester took the plunge and did just that.
Taylors Lead Lounge, the creation of Emma and Simon Taylor, began as an eBay bait shop four years ago and has grown to supply leads and lead moulds as well as bait.
First up are the leads. If cost is all you care about then, at 70p each (or 20 for £12), you’ll be happy, but these aren’t just cheap weights. All of them are handmade and double coated for durability, but perhaps the key selling point is their fast turnaround. There are plenty of small lead companies across the country, but if you place a big order you’re likely to be in for a fairly long wait for your products. The Taylors, who both have a customer-service background, aim to get orders out of the door in a couple of days.
In truth, there isn’t a huge amount that can be said about a lead, but these are clearly well made and the swivels are strong and have a non-glare finish. The leads are available in square, flat pear, dumpy pear, tournament and dumpy distance shapes, and in brown, silt or weedy colours. There's also the choice of textured or non-textured finishes.
Simon is a passionate carp angler and his range of baits are also well worth checking out. The Aquahaze glugs are particularly interesting and very keenly priced at just £2.99 for a 50ml bottle. The fluorescent Pineapple and Banoffee flavours that we sampled are vivid and attractive smelling, while the Tigernut Creme version looks to be a lovely natural product with a milky consistency. In all there are nine flavours to choose from.
The pop-ups, in Spicy Sausage, The Nuts and Coconut Creme flavours, are available in 14mm round or dumbbell shapes. The Spicy Sausage is the one that instantly grabs you, while the Coconut Creme is bound to be a great option on waters dominated by baits like Mainline Cell.
