New carp rods for 2018, Sonik's DominatorX range packs a punch. Here's our review...
RRP: £109.99 to £139.99 | www.soniksports.com
- We like: Looks, value and lively casting power
- We dislike: Understated looks could be too plain for some
Sitting between Sonik's amazing-value VaderX range and its top-end Gravity X casting tools, these rods occupy a crowded and competitive sector of the market.
What Sonik has done to differentiate the Dominators from competitors' models is to cram them with features and offer and attractive three-for-two offer.
When you buy two of these rods you get a third free, bringing the cost down to around £90 a rod. And for that money, these are mightily impressive wands.
The butt and tip sections have been stiffened compared to the VaderX range and, as our video shows, the recoil on these rods is very impressive, offering improved distance and accuracy.
Features-wise, there are genuine Fuji reel seats throughout the range, lightweight double-leg SiC guides including an anti-frap tip, a line-friendly line clip and 50mm butt rings on the 12ft and 13ft versions.
You also get a slim shrink-wrap handle with a flared butt grip incorporating a laser-etched 'S' logo and a general feel of quality throughout the rod. They certainly look the part with understated graphics and a 1k carbon weave in the butt and lower tip section.
It's a versatile range, too, with a 10ft 3lb-test-curve version and four 12-footers ranging from 2.75lb to 3.5lb test curves. A 13ft 3.5-test-curve model is also available.
Speaking of versatility, the matching Spod and Marker Hybrid rod comes in two versions - 12ft and 13ft. The longer version is a rare addition in a rod range at this price, but the slightly softer tip will find favour with powerful anglers looking to minimise crack offs.
