REVIEW: Sonik DominatorX big-pit reel [VIDEO]

This review was updated in May 2018 | There's a lot to like about Sonik's new great-value Dominator X big-pit carp reel...

RRP: £79.99 |

  • We like: We can't quite work out how they do it for £80!
  • We dislike: Looks aren't for everyone

We made a video about Sonik's new tackle for 2018 (scroll down to watch it) and on every single item featured we had to double and triple check that we had the prices correct.

We honestly thought the Northumberland-based tackle firm had littered its brochure with typos. But no, this DominatorX is simply another very keenly priced product from Sonik.

Functions-wise, the Dominator X 8000 boasts super-slow conciliation, a Quick-Torque quick drag system, a total of six ball bearings, a stainless-steel main shaft and two aluminium spools with dual sprung line clips.

You also get adjustment washers to tailor the line lay to your mainline's diameter, a spool-skirt lineguard, an oversized twist-free line roller and a 4.1:1 retrieve ratio.

The graphite body and rotor keeps weight down to 635g and in the hand this looks and feels like a quality product worth far more than its £80 asking price.

The tapered look to the rear of the reel might not be to everyone's taste, but the construction and details on the Dominator X exude quality.

Having been impressed with these reels at the trade launch, we went out on the bank with Sonik's Rod Bird to see them in action.

In a fishing situation, the line lay is super impressive and we were reminded just how light these reels are for a proper big pit.

Here's our video from our day with the DominatorX range:
