Building on the success of the Lo Pro, the ESP Hideout brolly system looks set to be another winner...
RRP: £269 | www.esp-carpgear.com
The ESP Hideout is the bigger brother of the hugely successful Lo Pro brolly, offering a few more creature comforts and protection from the elements.
Brollies have really come back into fashion in the carp world in recent years, but some anglers who have bought into this sector of the market want a more bivvy-like experience, so manufacturers have responded.
Brolly 'systems' seem to be the bridging point between pared-down brollies and luxury bivvies, so it's no surprise to see ESP enter the fray.
However, while some upmarket brollies have become bloated and lost touch with the original brolly concept, the Hideout manages to skillfully tread this tightrope.
It's still lightweight (under 8kg all in) and very easy to put up, and beyond the groundsheet, only the door panel requires zipping in. The side panels are integral and can be rolled very neatly away for an open-fronted layout, while the extended-rib design (seen on the Lo Pro) retains good levels of cover and the ability to get the shelter low to ground.
Unlike the Lo Pro, the Hideout comes with storm poles and naturally sits higher than its predecessor. Headroom is therefore improved and the living space is more than enough for a couple of nights on the bank.
In short, the Hideout still looks and acts like a lightweight, up-in-a-flash brolly, but with the added benefit of being a fully enclosed capsule should the weather close in.
The central spoke system doesn't tuck away out of head-banging range like some other brollies on the market, but everything else impressed us.
