RRP: £359.99 and £409.99 (Benchmark X, wide version) | www.avidcarp.com

When Avid launched the Benchmark range of bedchairs, plenty of anglers stood up and took note - or, they would have done, if they weren't so comfortable lying down on one of them.

The memory-foam mattresses were an industry first and the comfort levels were sublime.

However, the old Benchmarks were heavy and slightly difficult to setup with four pairs of legs. These new Benchmarks solve those issues and take the concept to the next level.

The frames are now aluminium rather than steel, and the leg count has dropped to three pairs. The result is a noticeable weight saving over the previous models.

That's all very well and good, but it's the new integral sleeping bags that you really want to know about. For the first time, Avid is offering a complete package here - bedchair and bag in one.

The dual-layered bag

Whether you choose the standard or the wide X model, both bags are dual layered, so you can sleep under both in the winter, or on top of one of them in the summer.

The memory-foam mattress is now effectively the bottom of the sleeping bag and is attached to the frame of the bedchair with Velcro, so you can remove it for cleaning.

The strap system keeping the bedchairs closed when not in use has also been altered to spread the load across the webbing, and the beds' hinges have also been given a makeover.

The standard version comes in at 14kg and the X, which is a mighty metre wide, is 18kg. Both are 2.1m (6ft 8ins) long. In comparison, the previous models were 12kg and 15kg respectively, obviously without any sleeping bags.

Our first impressions are that this is a meaningful update with plenty of improvements to match the demands of modern carpers. We look forward to giving them a long-term test.
