Tiny baits helped Rob O’Brien land one of Holme Fen’s five 60-pounders yesterday morning [20/10].
This 64lb 12oz mirror came to a snowman setup, which had been glugged for three months, surrounded by 8mm boilies and 6mm pellets.
Rob told Carpfeed he was a late call up to a group booking after another angler dropped out.
“I was already close by on holiday with my family and was coming home on the Friday, so it slotted in perfectly for me,” said the Rutland angler.
“I had to draw my swim while still on holiday, but luckily came out first!”
Rob added: “I had seen Jake’s had some form over the past month, so blindly opted for that swim.
“On arrival at the lake I was told it hadn’t done a fish for a while so knew it was going to be tricky.
“I had heard that a big social had been on the week before and figured it may have seen a lot of bait, so I choose to fish small items like DNA 8mm SLK boilies, some Crayfish Mini Mix pellet and some Holme Fen 6mm pellet.”
Having glugged his loosefeed in liquids, Rob opted to fish a deeper gully in front of a small island to stop the birds picking up his baits.
“I baited very sparingly,” said the gas engineer, “but knew there was plenty of attraction leaking off in case a fish passed by.”
Having heard fish over his spot during Friday evening, Rob got his chance at first light on Saturday.
“A pretty unassuming fight followed and the fish filled the landing net without any trouble! “After slipping on my waders and taking a peek at its width I knew it was a unit and we settled on a weight of 64lb 12oz after using two sets of scales – a new pb for me, beating my previous best of 58lb by a good distance!
“All in all, it was a great weekend with friends with some enjoyable fishing thrown in. Just how it should be.”
Rob fished an SLK wafter barrel topped with a 10mm PB pop-up on a blowback rig.
