One of the biggest grass carp in Europe stripped line so quickly on the take Jason Richards' alarm did not register the bite.
The 79lb giant fell during a trip to Vallee Lake in France and came in sweltering conditions.
“I was shocked when my left-hand rod went screaming off at around 10am,” said Jason, “I have never seen anything like it – the reel was stripping line so fast the alarm didn’t register the take!
“The battle was unremarkable initially until it was near the net when it suddenly came to life.
“Knowing the fragility of these wonderful creatures I popped it into the sling and kept a good flow of water going through while making sure the gap wasn’t big enough for it to dive out!”
The fish instantly bottomed the 33-year-old’s 60lb scales before a bigger pair were sourced.
“The fishery owner and bailiff came to assist and witness the weighing and when it was confirmed at 79lb it’s safe to say we were all gobsmacked,” said Jason.
The Dorset angler, who was fishing with partner Hannah, added: “Quite a crowd gathered to release this specimen.
"Knowing it is a lake record that the fishery owner has not seen and estimates at around 30-plus years old, it’s fair to say it’s a moment I will never forget and I was lucky enough to experience it surrounded by very special people.”
The fish was caught on an SSP Monster-X bottom bait over particles and System-X boilies. Jason used blowback rigs made with Kryston Merlin and Incognito.
