Carl Sharp struck at the right time to bag his third UK 50-pounder in the final week before the lake shuts for 10 weeks.
The 55lb 7oz mirror, known as Sweet Cheeks, set a new personal best for the Willenhall angler at the Avenue in Shropshire.
Carl told carpfeed.com: “I arrived to a fairly busy lake on Monday, with it being the last week of the season before the lake shuts down for 10 weeks.
“I managed to find a swim towards the corner where a northerly wind was pushing in to, and while talking to a few other anglers that were already present I noticed a few fish rolling in the general area.”
Carl fetched his gear and cast single PCF Stella Yella pop-ups to the area.
“I left them for an hour before making a decision to recast the left-hand rod as I'd seen a number of active fish in a certain area only 40 yards out in front.
“Within 10 minutes the bobbin slammed tight into the rod blank and I was into a very angry carp.
“It tore off towards the main gravel bar that runs down the middle of the lake at such a pace that I immediately thought I'd hooked one of the smaller carp in the lake.
“It was quickly under control and under the rod tip although this is where it remained for the next 20 minutes without breaking the surface once, just sending up constant tail patterns that made me think this fish wasn’t as small as first thought.
“When it finally surfaced and the net slid underneath it I was in total shock of exactly what I'd landed, a very big-framed mirror carp that was to beat my previous pb by 1lb 3oz.
“It has been quite a struggle on this first year on the syndicate for me, but it has all come good right at the very death.”
