Shane Thomas sold his bait boat and echo sounder and went back to basics - and was rewarded with a huge brace of carp weighing 53lb 6oz and 44lb 8oz.
The Hampshire angler recently decided to ‘dump the tech’ and go back to what he calls ‘proper old-school fishing’ with a marker float, waders, a prodding stick and a baiting pole.
The bold move certainly paid off, with the 44-year-old beating his personal best twice in his first session using the new approach at his southern syndicate venue.
After two biteless nights, Shane hit the jackpot after moving swims.
He explained: “With a prodding stick I found a hard spot under a tree overhang, and primed it with a baiting pole.
“I the did the same along the right-hand margin, before placing my rigs over each spot. An hour later I had a new pb of 44lb 8oz in the net, and then later that evening the same rod was off again, and I landed a massive beast of 53lb 6oz!
“Safe to say that I definitely don’t regret dumping the tech!” said Shane.
He used snowman presentations with Sticky Krill bottom baits and matching pink pop-ups. He fished these on inline leads, 5ins hooklinks of Fox Reflex Camo Soft and size 4 hooks.
