Opening weekend of the season at the Avenue produced a year’s worth of fish for Simon Pearson.
The 41-year-old caught Single Scale at 50lb 2oz, plus Joshua at 39lb 14oz and a 28lb 12oz mirror at the Shropshire big-fish water.
Simon, who also lost another big fish during his 36-hour session, told Carpfeed: “I only had four fish out of there last year and if you have three or four a season you have done well, so it was a dream session.”
Despite coming second last in the draw for swims, the Telford angler chose Pete’s Point which covers a large part of the main body of water.
“The fish had had a bit of a holiday, they’d been eating and relaxing, so I didn’t want to go crashing leads everywhere,” said Simon.
“My approach was to go with a simple set up – naked chod rigs with a size 8 hook and 12mm pop-ups – that I could cast at showing fish.”
After spotting some carp about 25yds out, Simon cast out and scattered boilies around his rigs.
“Forty five minutes in, the left-hand rod rips off and the fish gives a good account of itself. After playing it for around 20 minutes I’ve landed Single Scale at 50lb 2oz.”
With very high water and air temperatures after the late-morning bite, the fish was photographed quickly with venue boss Rob Hales in attendance.
A 28lb 12oz mirror followed for Simon at 4pm, before the mirror known as Joshua tripped up at 1pm on the second and final day of the session.
Simon baited with Spotted Fin Smokey Jack boilies and fished the company’s Pineapple and N-butyric pop-ups over the top.
