Rob Hughes ticked off two new year’s resolutions at once on his latest Euro trip.
The globetrotting Carp Team England manager set himself the target of catching a 50lb-plus common and a large fish from Italy in 2018 – and with this monster he completed.
The 58lb common came during a filming trip for Rob’s On The Bank series on BT Sport.
Speaking to Carpfeed from Italy, he said: “Just reporting in from one of my little ‘carpventures’ again and filming for On The Bank – this time in Italy.
“It’s bloody cold, -4c at night, but lovely and sunny in the day.
“I set myself a target of trying to catch a big Italian fish this year and I’ve also want to catch a common over 50lb as I haven’t had one for a while.
“Lo and behold, my first bite and this thing comes along at 58lb – happy days!”
Rob used a 3oz inline flat pear lead and a short 25lb Fox Reflex hooklink tied to a size 7 Fox Edges Wide Gap Beaked Point hook.
This was placed inside what Rob called a "big old bunker buster" of a solid PVA bag stuffed with 3mm pellets and his critically balanced 12mm pineapple and banana hookbait.
