Rare common and 47lb mirror in quick hit

Five carp to 47lb in just six hours gave John Claridge a combined weight of more than 145lb – and one of them hadn’t been caught for more than four years!

The Swindon angler, who runs Tackle Den in the heart of the Cotswold Water Park, enjoyed a hectic spell as part of a 40-hour session on a local gravel pit.

The biggest of the haul, known as the Length, weighed in at 47lb and was a recapture for the 44-year-old.

However, the second-biggest fish, which weighed 38lb 7oz and is known as the Blind Eye Common, is a very rare visitor to the bank.

“The Blind Eye Common is the lake-record common and the first capture for over four years,” said John, who also banked two mid-doubles and a 28lb 14oz fish.

Fishing to a small hole in the weed, John presented 2kg of frozen Sticky Manilla boilies coated in matching cloudy liquid, GLM and hemp oil.

He offered a Manilla hookbait on a stiff rig made with 20lb Fox Trans-Khaki Illusion and a size 5 Fox Medium Curve hook.
