Tasked with catching carp for the cameras in horrendous weather, Harry Charrington picked a day-ticket venue and ended up with a pb common.
The 29-year-old Fox media manager managed six fish in just 24 hours, including mirrors of 29lb 11oz and 28lb 8oz, plus this cracking 39lb 6oz common.
Harry told Carpfeed: “Usually for product videos, catching carp is unimportant, but because one of the products was the Carpmaster Air Unhooking Mat we needed one decent-sized carp to illustrate the points I wanted to make in the video.
“I chose Berners Hall in Essex because it had been in good form and looked like a decent option for a bite.
“The conditions on the day were horrible: 20-30mph north-easterly winds and temperatures of 2-4 degrees did not fill me with optimism.”
However, a fish showed itself and Harry quickly got into position to put PVA bags of maggots dusted in Sticky Krill Powder over the top to get a quick bite from a low 20.
“That was job done as far as I was concerned,” said the England international, “and we concentrated on getting the videos finished up.
“Towards the evening I put out about four pints of krilled maggots to a clear area at 29 wraps. The same solid bags of maggots were then deposited over the top of the bait.
“At around 9pm I received a couple of beeps. With tight lines at range it could only have been a carp.
“I leant into it but it was weeded instantly. After applying steady pressure, with the line whistling in the wind, I slowly started getting it moving towards me.
“The fight wasn’t spectacular but it felt like a better fish, which was confirmed when it rolled into the net.
“At 39lb 6oz it was a new pb common for me. A completely unexpected surprise and I was absolutely buzzing to have caught such an amazing fish.”
Harry received five more bites, landing four of them, before leaving the next morning.
“It’s safe to say we had more than enough footage of big fish on our new unhooking mat!”
