“I don’t imagine I’ll ever witness anything like it again for as long as I continue in carp fishing, but I’m pretty sure I will die trying.”
That was Spencer Howard’s reaction after banking this colossal 82lb 12oz common.
The fish came from one of Carpasens’ French venues and was part of a seven-carp catch that included a 62lb 8oz mirror, three 40s and two 30s.
The Hooked Tackle boss was on his fourth annual visit to the lake, but came out last in the draw for swims.
Despite this, the 47-year-old caught the 62lb 8oz mirror on the second night and, as temperatures cooled, latched into the massive common on the Thursday of his week-long trip.
“The bobbin dropped back with just a couple of bleeps on the alarm, then started to pull up and the rod bent round with a slow steady force.
“I quickly picked up into what I knew was a 'proper one' but would not have guessed in a million years it would turn out to be the biggest fish in the lake.”
After a tense battle, the fish was netted with the help of another anlger.
“It was an absolutely stunning fish which all of our group came to witness. This made the capture for me one that I will never forget.”
