Is this carp-fishing heaven?
Only two people have fished this Leney-stocked estate lake in the last 50 years, and one of them has just caught a new pb from the water after an epic misty battle at dawn.
Rhys Kolze Jones lived just about every carp angler’s dream as he brought the 26lb 2oz common to the bank at the incredible Shropshire venue.
He told Carpfeed: “I am privileged enough to be able to fish, for just six weeks a year, an overgrown, weed-choked, tremendously old estate lake in the Shropshire countryside.
“This lake was stocked by the legendary Donald Leney in the 1920s/30s and also contains tench, rudd and perch."
Leney is the Surrey fish farmer responsible for stocking Galician-strain carp into a wide variety of venues including Redmire Pool.
Rhys continued: “My father and I are the only two people to have fished the lake in the last 50 years.
“I’ve have seen fish cruising along the surface that were wider across the back than my golden retriever! Some of them are over 60 years old!
“Last Saturday morning, at about 5.45am, I hooked and landed a new pb. A fin-perfect, glorious specimen of 26lb 2oz.
“I tempted him with double corn and a simple 10lb mainline straight to a barbless size 6 Korda Wide Gape hook.
“The fight in the early morning mist was superb and lasted nearly 40 minutes.
“It’s not a monster by today’s standards but will always be one of my most memorable catches.”
