Lake's first 50 on second trip

Fresh from catching a 41lb 12oz mirror off the surface on his first session on a new water, James Salmons returned for trip two and caught a new lake record at 52lb 4oz.

The mighty mirror, known as the Pig, is the Cambridgeshire syndicate water’s first-ever 50 and was up in weight by more than 5lb since its last capture in the spring.

“On my first session on the new lake I managed a surface pb of 41lb 12oz, along with a couple of twenties off the bottom,” James told Carpfeed.

“I arrived for my second session the following week to find a fairly busy lake and, as a result, I spent the first night in an area I didn’t fancy too much.”

The next day, the Chub-backed angler found some fish in one corner of the lake and jumped into a nearby swim after it was vacated in the afternoon.

“The rods went out nicely an hour before dark and I sat back in a much more confident mood than the previous evening." he said.

“At around midnight I received a big liner on one of the rods, so I hoped something was happening, and a few hours later so it proved as the alarm let out a succession of bleeps.

“I lifted the rod to be greeted with a fish that at first didn’t feel all that big as it allowed me to lead it straight back.

“Halfway in the fish went on a couple of steady runs, but again they were easily controlled and before long I had the fish ready for the net.

“At first glance it didn’t seem too big but as its head went over the net cord I quickly realised it was massive and I jumped in the lake to quickly scoop it up!

“Hoisting it up on the scales I concentrated on the mid-40 range and as I let the scales take the weight I saw the needle go flying past.

“It took a couple of seconds to take in as I realised that it had settled over 52lb! I was in a complete state of shock as it was the lake’s first 50lb fish.”

Not long after, James bagged a 27lb 8oz mirror before being joined on the venue for a celebration of its first 50.
