A Christmas session at a popular day-ticket fishery gave Ross Hodgetts a couple of fine presents including a near-40lb common.
The 38-year-old plasterer was on the bank at Farlows in Buckinghamshire for three nights from Christmas Eve and banked this 39lb 2oz common on Boxing Day.
He said: “Having fished Farlows 20-plus years ago I thought it would be nice to try my luck again.
“On arrival the weather looked good and I knew where I wanted to be. A couple of lads were fishing in the swims until dark, so I fished single hookbaits the first night.
“On Christmas Day, after seeing a couple of fish in the area at first light, I leaded up to see what I could find.
“After a couple of casts I remembered an old spot that had been kind to me in the past, so two pop-up rigs were placed there – one directly on the spot and one just off it.
“At 5am the next morning I was away and after not too much trouble a rather large common found its way into the landing net.”
After photographing the 39lb 2oz fish at first light, conditions deteriorated and 24 hours later things were looking grim.
“There were 40mph north-westerly winds, rain and snow,” said Ross. “With the temperatures dropping like a stone we decided the warm café on Heron’s Point was calling.
“As I was packing up and had got most of my gear away, the left-hand rod was away and an old 24lb mirror gave me the run around in the rain.
“The four-hour drive home in terrible conditions was all worth it,” added the Mansfield angler.
