Groom takes rods on canal honeymoon and nets a cracker

A honeymoon boat trip through France turned into a memorable carp trip for lucky groom Christopher Cloke.

With his new wife Philippa’s blessing, Christopher was able to grab a few hours’ angling each day from their hire boat on the Canal du Midi in the south of the country.

“As you can imagine,” he told Carpfeed, “this is very much untouched water by British anglers.

“With permission, I was allowed to fish in the morning before making breakfast in bed for my wife and in the evening for a few hours.

“I tried a few marinas and had a 26lb 6oz fish out one morning, waking my wife who was half-naked to take a picture!

“Along the holiday I had a few small carp and catfish, which I was pleased with. On the last evening on the boat I fished an area I had been prebaiting as we passed earlier in the week near Trebes.

“I moored up along the same area and baited up the same spot with tigers and Nash Candy Nut Crush boilies.

“At just after 10pm the Delks went mad as line was stripping out. I grabbed the rod and it felt a lump as it tore down the canal like a steam train. After a 30-minute battle, and with my new wife in utter shock as my 9ft rod bent in half, I landed this beautiful wild canal fish.

“It was a 32lb 2oz mirror, which is a new pb and a fish the new wife and I will never forget!”
