Fishing away from crowds brings Bluebell 40

Fishing away from the pressured end of the lake gave Matthew Roberts a Bluebell Lakes 40-pounder.

The 41lb 8oz Scar Common came from Swan Lake on the popular Northamptonshire day-ticket complex.

Matthew, who was fishing with his mate Gaz Jones, arrived on a Sunday and “found the fish immediately”.

“Unfortunately,” he added, “every peg on the whole of the top of the lake was taken!

“So after a couple more laps of the lake and a look around kingfisher we decided to set up on Swan at the opposite end of the lake, away from the angling pressure and constant bombardment of spods, in the hope that all the commotion would move the fish on to us.”

Deciding to fish stealthily, Matthew quickly found a couple of clean spots and baited lightly.

“It was 5pm by the time all rods were sorted and we didn’t see a sign of any fish that evening,” he said.

“I did, however, get a couple of liners around 9am the next morning, then it went all quiet again until 10am when my left-hand rod, on the small clear spot in the weed at six wraps out, tore off leaving a massive plume of bubbles!

“Picking up the rod, the fish flat-rodded me, taking around 30 yards of line straight into a thick weedbed.

“After constant pressure for a few minutes the fish pulled free. Most of the 10-minute battle was under the rod tip and when Gaz finally slipped the net under her he shouted to me that I had a new pb!

“She went 41lb 8oz on the scales, smashing my common pb by over 15lb and my overall pb by nearly 5lb.”
