John Wilkes banked the biggest fish in a popular day-ticket lake… on his very first cast!
The Korda marketing manager was fishing at Farlows Lake for the first time when he caught the Buckinghamshire venue’s Big Common at 42lb 8oz just a couple of hours after casting out his a solid PVA bag.
As well as being his first UK 40, the fish also set a new personal best.
John was at the venue with ‘Korda Koach’ Rob Burgess, and the pair were working on the tackle company’s Adult Carp Academy project, which offers free coaching to anglers fishing day-ticket waters.
He said: “Once the guys on the academy were busy putting their new-found skills to the test, I decided to get my rods out.
“I had a good lead around and found a nice spot. My confidence was high, as the weather and wind were perfect.
“I tied up a solid PVA bag with a Mainline Fyber wafter hookbait and my first cast hit the spot perfectly. The old faithful ‘that’s a bite’ feeling kicked in!
“Just a few hours later the tip of my left-hand rod pulled round and I was on it in seconds.
“The fish kited right, and immediately I knew it was a decent one.
“It stayed deep during the fight, but when it surfaced it created a huge boil of water. Rob and I just looked at each other in shock!
“As it went in the net we started celebrating. It was a special moment... it was the Big Common, the biggest fish in the lake!
“I’d banked my new PB on my first trip to Farlows, on my my first cast, and it was also my first 40. My legs went to jelly!”
