Plummeting temperatures couldn’t prevent Andy Holdaway from banking this superb common on his first visit to Orchid Lake.
The 31-year-old caught the 32lb 12oz fish during a 48-hour session on the popular Oxfordshire day-ticket water.
He said: “On my first trip to the lake it was a busy, warm day so I decided to fish a channel off an island which I thought the carp would patrol.
“I baited a spod mix of crushed Nash Scopex Squid boilies, sweetcorn, maggots and hemp oil while presenting a maggot rig, flavoured in Scopex 1, over the top.
“After seeing fish crash out during the evening the temperature dropped, but the next morning the alarm screamed off and I was in to a powerful common trying get in to a snag in the way of a sunken tree.
“After a long battle I just about managed to get this long common into the net.”
