Ed Betteridge has blitzed his way to his target fish in double-quick time, banking his second 50-pounder in two months.
Having caught a 50lb 12oz mirror in the summer, the Greys media manager turned his attentions to Shallow Lagoon on the St Ives complex in Cambridgeshire and banked Colin at 50lb 10oz.
“I couldn't believe it I had my second 50lb in the same amount of months,” he said. “Shallow Lagoon had been really kind to me with 13 bites and 11 fish landed in just 17 nights’ fishing!”
On his most recent session, Ed banked two 20s from open water before receiving a take on a rod fished close to some lilypads.
He said: “I was fishing with the drag locked up pretty tightly so it can only yield line if it has to, basically before the whole set up gets dragged in.
“I received a few beeps to start with, which had me out of bed and putting my boots on, then the alarm screamed as about 2-3yds of line was taken from the tight clutch.
“I grabbed the rod to feel a powerful fish on the end. It was well within the pads and I could feel them grating on the line, but I could also feel the fish kicking and trying to surge deeper.
“I knew I needed to keep it moving so I grabbed the spool and walked backwards with the rod bent.
“It really was heart wrenching, but the fish began to move as the 20lb SUBbraid cut through the stems. I honestly think most mono and fluorocarbon lines would have parted at that point, but the braid kept me connected.”
“I eventually slipped the net under her and knew she was a big fish, but once I peered into the net I could see it looked like Colin. I couldn’t quite believe it until I lifted her up to feel the full weight!”
