When 12-year-old Oliver Steadman-Walleys saw his dad head to an on-site tackle shop for supplies, little did either of them know what was about to unfold.
Fishing together at RH Fisheries’ Monument Two, the pair had yet to receive any action when dad Barry nipped to the shop for more leads.
While he was away, young Oliver got a bite and landed an incredible 42lb mirror all by himself.
“It’s a story that will live long in the memory,” said fishery manager Tom Forrester.
“Oliver was fishing alongside his dad on one of our double swims, during which time his dad Barry was in the shop buying leads.
“Unbeknown to us both, in the meantime Oliver had landed a 42lb mirror all by himself.
“It’s a fish that has put on 14lb since we opened the fishery and is set to keep on growing. An incredible capture for such a young man.”
Not content with the 40, Oliver went on to land two other carp of 21lb and 12lb 4oz.
Oliver wasn’t the only youngster to excel on the Monument complex last week. Jake White took some advice from fishery manager Tom and flicked a rod close in on peg two on Monument One to land Humpy at 34lb.
The second 40 of the week went to John Marzelos who bagged the Big Male from Monument One at 40lb 4oz.
Another angler to cash in on Monument Two's form was John Barnes who landed two crackers in the shape of Jigsaw at 36lb 12oz and the Machine at 32lb.
"The fishing has been nothing short of staggering this week," said Tom, who caught a 35lb 2oz mirror himself.
