One of the biggest day-ticket fish around was this morning [2/8] tamed on a size 10 hook and an 11ft zig.
The big mirror, known as Dave, weighed 54lb exactly at Swan Lake on the Bluebell complex in Northamptonshire.
Captor Jon Gill told Carpfeed it was a thankfully uneventful fight. “This big head popped up and I thought ‘that’s a big carp’, then it took an age to get its tail in the net.
“When I looked at it and saw the big shoulders I knew which fish it was.”
Jon is a regular at the popular day-ticket site, but normally targets neighbouring Kingfisher Lake. After switching to Swan he banked two 20s on his last session and had already managed a 22lb mirror on the first morning of this week’s three-night stay.
He said: “It had gone a bit dead. The fish were about but they were spread all over the lake. The night before I’d seen fish show at range, so I banged out a zig at 100yds.
“This morning I got a big drop-back and jumped out of the bivvy and hit into the fish. It felt heavy and just plodded about, but apart from going down to one side it just sort of came in.
“It was in great condition and behaved impeccably on the mat.”
The 38-year-old, who travels from Mid Wales to fish the complex, presented a piece of black foam soaked in Baitworks Scent from Hell booster on a size 10 Korum Xpert Power hook tied to 12lb Fox Zig Line.
