Damian Jones was staring at his rods when one of them tore off and brought him a new personal best in the shape of a 36lb 4oz common from the Wharf in Cardiff.
The fish, known as Ollie, was joined by a pb mirror of 23lb as the 37-year-old saw out the year in style at the former shipping dock in the heart of the Welsh capital.
Fishing a 22-hour session into New Year’s Eve, Damian, who returned to carp fishing just 14 months ago after a 15-year absence, had the big common on the final day of 2017.
He told Carpfeed: “I was actually looking at my rods when I had the run from Ollie.
“She gave me a proper screaming run, but when I up picked the rod and started to play her I honestly thought it was a smaller carp.
“I saw her just under the surface around 20yds out where I could see she was a common. She was head shaking and plodding around.
“I managed to get her to within netting range and I could see she was a good common, but I honestly thought she was a mid-20.
“When she was in the net I could see which common it was and luckily a friend was walking to me with his barrow as he was starting a day session, so he assisted with weighing and taking pictures."
Damian used 12mm Half Tone DNA S7 pop-ups and end tackle from CV Tackle and Bait.
