Wellington Country Park has continued its phenomenal form, giving up one of its most sought-after prizes in the form of the Big Sutton at 54lb 5oz to venue regular Charlie Hayes.
Charlie had already landed another Welly 50, Dropscale at 50lb 10oz, earlier on in his session but added to this on the final morning of his three-day stint with the Big Sutton, his new personal best.
The impressive fish had not been caught since August of last year but is now Charlie’s sixth 50lb-plus carp from the lake in three years.
The RidgeMonkey and Spotted Fin-backed angler said: “Upon arrival I located a group of fish near an overhanging snag close to the pads, which turned out to be the area I caught all the fish from.
“On the Sunday morning I had a 25lb common, which gave me a right battle, so I got a soaking going in the lake for it!
“Dropscale turned up the same afternoon and was something else though, it has a massive tail on it – so the fight was just unbelievable. It flat rodded me several times in our 20-minute battle.
“I clamped down on the second 50 a lot more as I didn’t know it was one of the big girls when I hooked it. I certainly am more than chuffed with how the session ended though.”
All of Charlie’s fish fell to 12mm pink homemade Catalyst cork-ball pop-ups presented on Ronnie rigs with a size 4 curve hook.
These were fished on a spot on the far margin at 60yds where Charlie introduced 5kg of Spotted Fin Catalyst boilies in 15 and 20mm sizes throughout the session.
