A bottom-bait Ronnie rig was enough to tempt this 27-pounder from a popular stretch of the River Trent.

Fishing at Bob’s Island at Newark, Patrick Clampett targeted a set of reeds and also managed an 8lb barbel.

The fish came just five minutes before the planned end of a social session.

Patrick told Carpfeed: “She fell to a laid-down Ronnie rig as a pop-up would move around too much in the flow. It was placed next to a set of reeds I had noticed moving the night before.

“She came five minutes before I was going to pack up and fought like a demon, in and out of the reeds.”

Patrick used a JB1 boilie from Just Barbel Baits.
