Angling fanatic buys Chris Yates' rod for big price

The rod that Chris Yates used to land his iconic 51lb 8oz carp from Redmire Pool has been sold for well above its auction estimate.

The winning bidder phoned in his offers from his best friend's wedding and has revealed he is a huge fan of the Passion for Angling star.

The Mk4 Avon rod, built by Dick Walker, was expected to fetch between £4,000 and £6,000 when it went up for sale at Angling Auctions in Romsey, Hampshire.

But, with two telephone bidders competing for it, the price finally settled on £8,280.

Winning bidder Rodger Sargent from Sussex said: "There was no way anyone else was getting their hands on that rod, as to own a piece of carp-fishing history like this rod is a dream come true to me.”

The keen angler added: “I was at my best friend’s wedding when I was bidding for the rod and it was very hard to explain to people why I was spending so much money on a fishing rod.

“The best way I could explain it to them was to imagine Lionel Messi scoring a vital goal in say a World Cup or Champions League final with a pair of Geoff Hurst’s boots on.

“Dick Walker and Chris have been so influential and the record fish they have caught have really shaped my fishing life, so to own a rod that was made by Dick and used by Chris is incredible.

“I really don’t think I can bring myself to use the rod for fear of an accident so I’m going to get a presentation case.

"I’ve just bought a house with a lake, so I will have it displayed in an environment fitting for such a beautiful and iconic piece of tackle.”

Chris sold the rod in 1997 following his divorce. Before the auction he offered to take the winning bidder fishing and Carpfeed understands Rodger and Chris will meet up soon.
