A day-ticket water that didn’t exist until five years ago and has only been open since 2015 has produced a new lake-record carp of 47lb 2oz.
Luke Edwards caught the big mirror from Monument Two at RH Fisheries in Shropshire, just days after returning from a hauling trip to Euro Aqua in Hungary.
The 37-year-old, who caught fish to 79lb on his foreign adventure, told Carpfeed: “I arrived back from Hungary on Tuesday morning and still had a few days off at work, so with the wife at work and the kids at grandma’s I took a last-minute peg on Monument Two!
“I arrived on Thursday morning with a friend from work, Billy Mills, who hasn’t really fished the venue. We were in the Royal Box, peg one, and after getting the lowdown off the lads from the previous session I decided to fish on the left-hand side of the bar in front of this peg at 15 and a quarter rod lengths, and one at 14 and a quarter, and Billy doing the same.”
Having baited with maggots, chopped Edge boilies, hemp and casters, Luke had three quick takes on the left-hand rod resulting in a trio of doubles.
“The next run was the big mirror, known as Bella,” said the Wolverhampton angler. “After a powerful run in which last about 15 minutes I said to Billy it might be foul hooked as it felt like a dead weight.
“Eventually I got her up and then I realised which fish it was. I’d seen her before and I knew she was big, but when the needle went round to 47lb 2oz I didn’t know it was a lake record until Harry Hales came round and told me.
“It’s the fourth 40 and biggest fish I’ve had from the Monument complex, but my first 40 from M2 so I’m absolutely buzzing.”
Luke fished critically balanced maggots on a size 6 Fox Edges Medium Curve hook on combi rigs tied with 16lb Fox Trans Khaki Illusion.
