Rob Jewel was forced to submerge his rod tip and play this 38lb 5oz common under the ice after he woke to find the lake he was fishing frozen.
He was doing an overnighter at Riverton Lakes, north Devon, and had already landed a 33lb 2oz mirror when a second bite produced this big common known as Birthmark.
Rob said: “I wasn’t confident of a bite as it was so cold, and after putting half a kilo of boilies around each rod I set the traps for the night.
“Just an hour later I had a jittery take, resulting in the 33, which I thought was a right result.
“Early the next morning I woke to a frozen lake. I broke the ice around my lines and was going to head home but decided to let my gear dry out first.
“Good job, too, as two hours later I got a screaming take and had to push the rod tip beneath the water and play the fish under the ice! It was a right result, and my best-ever 24-hour session in winter.”
Rob used DNA The Switch boilies.
