Huge brace in 60 minutes at Emperor Lakes

Two carp for more than 85lb in an hour at Devon venue

Single hookbaits gave Mark Owen two fish for 86lb 7oz in under 60 minutes.

Mirrors of 47lb 15oz and 38lb 8oz made up the impressive brace at Devon’s Emperor Lakes, before the 50-year-old returned the next week to bank a 36lb 6oz mirror.

“Without being too precise,” joked Mark about the quick-fire brace, “they came 59 minutes apart.”

Arriving on Friday afternoon to find the Syndicate Lake at the Loddiswell venue busy, the 50-year-old picked a swim with decent water form.

He said: “I had been fishing over a bit of bait this winter but results hadn’t been great, so I had one of those eureka moments and decided to go back to fishing single hookbaits. Maybe I caught because of this, or maybe it was coincidence.”

After a quiet night, the Paignton angler spotted a fish roll at midday on Saturday and cast a single pop-up to the area.

Not long later he received a tentative take. “I was on the rod before the Delkim screamed off but when I hit into it, boy oh boy, it was epic! I’ve said to a few people it must be the hardest winter fight I’ve ever had.

“It went on four good runs and felt like it was on for half an hour, though it was probably more like five to 10 minutes. I honestly thought I’d foul hooked it, but when she rolled head first I recognised the fish and knew it was big.”

The fish, which is known as No 8, is one of three upper forties in the lake and has previously topped 49lb.

Mark, who has fished the venue for six years and leads the syndicate, added: “I got the rod back out and it was away within an hour with a lovely fish which is almost like a leather.”

A week later, Mark returned to the lake and, using the same tactics, caught Little Blackie at 36lb 6oz.

Carpfeed verdict

Two things stand out from these captures. Firstly, in winter where there’s one fish there are usually more, so getting your rod back out to the same spot quickly will certainly do you no harm. Secondly, single hookbaits can be all you need at any time of year!
