The curtain-raiser at Orchard Place Farm in Kent saw 12 pairs fighting it out for four qualifying places.
Lee May and Paul Michael Smith triumphed with five fish for 91lb 4oz from peg 7, narrowly pipping Tony Reynolds and Ashley Izzard in peg 9 who caught the same number of fish for 91lb 3oz.
Just 8lb separated the top four, making for an intriguing match right up until the final hooter.
Brothers Billy and Ricky Dummer came third with four fish for 85lb 8oz, while Mick Ledger and Dan Moorcroft took fourth with 83lb 5oz made up of four fish.
In all, 22 fish were caught by seven pairs. There were 12 20s and the rest of the fish were doubles.
The Dummers, fishing on peg 10, caught the biggest fish at 29lb 1oz.
