The unstoppable David Gaskin caught two carp in an afternoon for more than 100lb as his incredible run at Wellington Country Park continued.
The Gardner and CC Moore-backed angler banked a 42lb 8oz common and a 59lb 8oz mirror during an incredible spell at the Berkshire water.
Last year David caught four fifties in a total of six fish over 46lb from the syndicate venue and picked up where he left off as Storm Doris swept in.
Arriving at the lake to hear it had just produced its second fish of 2017, David headed to the Bush swim.
He said: “With the wind increasing I had to get the rods out sharpish because I wanted to try to hit some long spots in the swim and the crosswind was far from forgiving.
“It was the first time in weeks that I believed I had a genuine chance of a bite, the conditions were just getting better and better. At 11pm, I had a bleep on the rod and was convinced the bobbin had moved. At that very moment a one-toner got me scrambling out of the bivvy.
“Thankfully, the scrap was straight forward and a 30lb-plus carp was in the net.”
With conditions still spot on, David recast his rods at first light and his second fish, at 4pm, weighed in at 42lb 8oz and was “one of the most splendid-looking commons I have ever seen”.
A patient wait for a lull in the wind followed, as David paused for the perfect moment to blast his rig back to the spot.
“After dark, the island rod was away and this felt like an eternity to get in, but eventually the huge frame of a mirror carp broke the surface in front of me. I scooped it up immediately and the leviathan was in the net.
“In the wind and spray it was hard to identify which fish it was, so I got everything prepped to try to weigh it.”
With the help of Lewis Read and a few other syndicate members a weight of 59lb 8oz was settled on.
“An afternoon brace of over 100lb,” said David, “phenomenal fish from an equally phenomenal venue.”
RIG AND BAIT
- Munnie rig (Ronnie rig variation)
- Hook: Size 6 Gardner Covert Dark Mugga
- Loosefeed: Initial kilo of CC Moore Live System, topped up after each bite
- Hookbait: Pink CC Moore Northern Special pop-up
- Lead arrangement: 4oz helicopter setup
One of the most in-form anglers of last year is at it again. He makes Welly look easy, and it certainly isn’t. Storm Doris provided great conditions, but precision casting and baiting up was needed to produce this incredible haul. Three fish for more than 130lb is mindblowing.
